Diagnosis

Your doctor or ophthalmologist will test for dry eye syndrome, using a variety of simple tests.

Schirmer Test - this test involves the insertion of special filter paper of specific dimensions, under the lower eyelid, for a specified period of time. The amount of wetting is then measured, and the results are compared to normal standards.

Rose Bengal Staining - this test involves the introduction of a sensitive dye that will stain the areas of the eye that are dry.

Fluoroscein Staining - this test is similar to staining with rose bengal, but uses a different stain. A type of microscope called a slit lamp, utilizing a black light, will be used to view the eye following insertion of the fluoroscein.  TOP
