Types Of ARMD
1. Dry
As the macular RPE degenerates, it is unable to function properly. Over time the degenerated RPE causes the photoreceptors to function improperly, resulting in a loss of vision. This is called the dry form of ARMD. It is also known as non-exudative, where exudative refers to fluid. RPE dysfunction results in formation of drusen, which are yellow deposits found underneath the retina. Various forms of drusen are known, including hard, calcific (contain excess calcium) and soft. Over time the RPE may die (atrophy). The ophthalmologist or optometrist may see both drusen and RPE atrophy. Up to 90% of patients with ARMD have this form.
